Established under the 1984 Telecommunications Act to advise Oftel on regulatory matters in Wales. Awaiting the revival of something similar under Ofcom.

WAN - Wide Area Network
A network which connects computers on different sites over a long distance.

Enables mobile phones and wireless devices to send e-mail and access the Internet and corporate intranets.

WIRELESS TELEPHONY
Generally there are considered to be two main types of wireless telephones - cordless (analogue) and DECT (digital), although mobile phones and radio phones could be included.

WLAN - Wireless LAN
WLANs use radio technology instead of cabling. Currently only capable of delivering speeds of 1-15Mbps, but still under development and is expected in the future to support ATM technology, implying speeds of 155 Mbps or above.
