A software application running on a network computer which logs and reports all, or filtered, data packet activity on the network.

PBX or PABX - Private (Automatic) Branch Exchange
A private exchange on the customer premises that "switches" calls to and from the public telephone network. Can include functions such as call logging, voicemail, interactive voice response (IVR) and call diversion, up to full scale computer telephony integration (CTI).

PERSONAL NUMBERING
A service based on number translation which enables a customer to be called using a single "personal" (070) telephone number, but to receive those calls at virtually any telephone number in the UK.

POTS - Plain Old Telephone Service
A much used acronym for the standard telephone network. An analogue system using "twisted pair" copper wires.
PRI ISDN - Primary Rate Interface ISDN
For installations of six "lines" or more, where one physical line can carry up to 30 voice channels. Also known as ISDN30.

PRIVATE NETWORK
A telecommunications network on the customer's side of a network termination point, forming the boundary between a public telecommunication system run under a PTO licence and the user's network, generally run under a Class Licence.
PRS - Premium Rate Service
A service, such as recorded information or live "chat", run by an independent service provider. Premium rate (090X) calls are charged at a higher rate than ordinary calls.
