EDGE - Enhanced Data GSM Environment
EDGE is a digital mobile technology, expected to be commercially available in 2001. It is faster than GSM, and considered to be the evolutionary standard on the way to UMTS.

EMS - enhanced messaging service
as the term implies this is an advance on SMS which allows graphics, sounds and other enhanced features to be incorporated into mobile phone text messages.
ENCRYPTION
The coding of information, for example to stop people reading credit card numbers sent over the Internet.
ETHERNET
A system used in local area networking which allows computers to communicate with each other and exchange data at 10 or 100mbps and now up to 1gbps.

EXCHANGE
A building or cabinet where local loop wiring converges and calls are directed to their destination, either back over the local loop or over a trunk line to the wider network.
EXTENSION
A telephone, usually connected to a PBX, which does not have direct access to the public network.
EXTRANET
A network connecting a group of companies or organisations using Internet protocols, but separate from the Internet. Often part of an organisation's intranet shared with other organisations.
